Welcome to my blog!

March 5, 2009

Hello bloggers. I’ve set this blog up because I want to start and participate in discussions about music – new and old.

Foolishly, for a while, I thought that I was a bit of a know-it-all about music. It was only when I first started making forays into the world of music, through a number of avenues, that I realised just how behind I really was.

The fact is that the music industry is so vast and incorporates so many scenes in so many cities. There are hundreds of genres and sub-genres (just the other day I was having an argument about whether fightpop was really a genre), thousands upon thousands of bands, and more ways than ever to have your music heard. I’m waffling now, but my point is basically that it’s very hard to really keep up-to-date with music and be an omniscient source of reliable information. That said: I hope to use this blog to encourage myself to learn more; see more shows; listen to bands I wouldn’t usually listen to, and in turn write about my findings to encourage anyone who reads this to do the same.

I’ll start by rather lazily (it is nearly 2am!) listing some of the bands I’ve been lucky enough to come across while working for the Great Escape Festival these last few weeks. Some I’m sure you’ll know already, some maybe not, but they’re all well worth a listen!

Animal Kingdom – beautiful ambient indie – http://www.myspace.com/weareanimalkingdom

The Miserable Rich – melodic alt / folk – http://www.myspace.com/themiserablerich

The Mae Shi – this fight pop I’ve been banging on about, chaotic, catchy and dance inducing – http://www.myspace.com/themaeshi

Hey Rosetta! – uptempo, sing-along indie / folk – http://www.myspace.com/heyrosetta

Dan Mangan – a folk singer-songwriter with a Cash-esque gravelly tone despite his tender years. – http://www.myspace.com/danmangan

Marina and the Diamonds – at times displaying the airy tones of Imogen heap; the snarl of Brody Armstrong; and the operatic quality of Kate Bush, all over a catchy electropop platform, I love this girl! – http://www.myspace.com/marinaandthediamonds

I hope you’ll check out one or more of these and let me know what you think, sorry it is a bit of a lazy way to start off my blog but stay tuned because I’m off to see hot new London band the Clones playing their first gig tonight, and will be posting a review of it shortly!

Inabit!
